Digging Into Spotlight

I came across a nice article on advanced searching using Spotlight that talked about search keywords like kind and date, and as I read it I thought to myself I wonder what other cool keywords you can use in Spotlight? At first blush, this seems like the type of innocent question that should be easy to quickly answer, but as often is the case with technology, things are a bit more complicated than they first appear.

Parsing Things Database

I've been using Things to manage my todo lists recently. I like the simplicity and ease of use of the app and even in beta, it covers most of what I want from a task management application. One of the reasons I like it is that is uses an XML file for storing all the content, which makes it easy for me to process the data if there is a feature Things doesn't support. The other day I wanted to print out my to-do list and Things doesn't really have much support for printing yet, so I decided to write a little script to parse the data file and print it out to text.

Amazon vs. iTunes

I bought some new music online the other night. It was easy, cheap, and the songs appeared directly in my iTunes library and synced up with my iPod without a hitch as usual. Size Matters

I just bought a new 24-inch iMac and it is gorgeous! Its like a work of art - something you'd expect to see at MoMA. Since I'd been using a 13-inch Macbook for the last 6 months as my first venture into the modern Mac age, I hadn't really had the experience of sitting down in front of a real Mac workstation with a real keyboard, mouse and display. And boy is this display nice! I was looking at photos of my kids full screen and they seem life size. (I think I'm going to have to start using my Canon 10D's RAW image format more now that I have a worthy display).

Jumping Out of Windows

A couple of months ago I posted my initial impressions of the MacBook, or to be more accurate, my thoughts on moving to a Mac after many years as a Windows user. As I mentioned then, the support for Windows on the new Intel-based Macs created just the low-risk situation I needed to dip my toes into the water...

Macbook Impressions

I recently bought a Macbook. This is the second time I've owned a Mac in my life, the first being a brief encounter with a PowerBook Duo in the early 90's, so for all practical purposes, it was a completely different machine.
